2015 A-Salon Autumn Series – Plan Our Own City: From Inform to Empower?
November 6, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
The Shun Hing College A Salon Spring Series-“Understanding Hong Kong” aims to invite a variety of speakers to offer their insights on Hong Kong society, culture, politics, arts, architecture, etc., as well as to encourage vibrant discussions among residents and the HKU community.
About our Speaker
Mr. Jeffrey Wong is a practising urban planner in a renowned multinational firm. He is currently the Co-chairperson of Young Planners Group, the Hong Kong Institute of Planners, and Secretary General of Hong Kong Public Space Initiative, who has been organising various educational and community engagement programmes to promote the concept and importance of town planning and public space to all walks of life. Mr. Wong envisions that in the future public spaces in Hong Kong could evolve into effective platforms for exchanging views and building consensus among members of the community.
About the Talk
From the demolition of Queen’s Pier in 2008 to the promulgation of Northeast New Territories development plan in recent two years, the city’s prevailing town planning system has unexpectedly been attracting much controversies and criticisms. Is it true that the voice of public are not well heard and addressed? Is it a fact that Town Planning Board, which allows the greatest degree of public participation as compared with other Government committees, is deviating from its intended functions and duties? With the recent case studies including heated debate on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront revitalisation plan and Des Voeux Road Central rezoning exercises, Mr. Wong will give the audience a quick review of community participation in the town planning system of Hong Kong.
