Finalized Re-admission Mechanism
Introduction of the Admission Committee, reasons for re-admission, application procedure, selection criteria and selection procedure, etc. (See presentation slides HERE)
Q1. How to define and judge applicant’s medical needs? What kind of documents should be provided?
A: Final decision will be made by Master on a case-by-case basis. Students should submit relevant documentations provided by Queen Mary Hospital, HKU Hospital or other authorized hospitals in Hong Kong, rather than documentations provided by hospitals from the applicant’s Home town or home country (By Michael). The Admission Committee will take into consideration whether or not living in HKU Residential Colleges can protect the students with physical or mental illnesses better than letting them live outside Residential Colleges.
Q2: Does Shun Hing College have two year limit of residence for current residents?
A: No, there is no such limit for now.
Q3: What is the quota for UGs and PGs in 2014-2015 academic year? What is the ratio of UGs and PGs?
A: Accurate quota of current and future UGs and PGs might be released in middle April by CEDARS. The general goal of RC is to reach the ratio of PGs and UGs 1:1, and ratio of local students, Mainland China students and international students 1:1:1. In 2013-2014 academic year, for four blocks of Residential Colleges together, the quota for UGs is 1100, while the quota for PGs is 700. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the quota for PGs might increase to 800 in total. Currently, the ratio of PGs and UGs in Shun Hing College is 4:6.
Q4: Can applicants choose the room type they prefer in internal application for re-admission? Will they be assigned to the same type of room they are living in this academic year?
A: Applicants can choose the room type they prefer in the internal application form. We will do our best to fulfill applicants’ specific needs.
Q5: What is the ratio of successful and pending applications for re-admission?
A: There is no fixed ratio of successful and pending applications. The ratio of successful and pending applications will partly depend on the accurate quota for residents in 2014-2015 academic year. The Admission Committee will carefully examine applicants’ application form and relevant supporting documents before deciding successful and pending cases. Pending applicants will be invited to an individual interview.
Q6: Can students know the specific score they get in each selection criteria? How can applicants know their application have been appropriately handled and carefully assessed?
A: The internal application form and relevant documents submitted by each applicant will be kept confidential and used for re-admission only. Pending applicants will be invited to individual interviews and have an opportunity to defense why they deserve a place. Unsuccessful applicants are entitled to file an appeal within 3 days after the disclosure of re-admission results by CEDARS. Whenever you have questions, please feel free to contact tutors or senior tutor.
Q7: Can finalized re-admission results be disclosed earlier?
A: Official results will be released by CEDARS in late May. We might disclose informal results of the re-admission to successful applicants a bit earlier. The official and finalized results can only be released by CEDARS.
Q8: What are the chances of being re-admitted for those unsuccessful applicants who file an appeal?
A: The Admission Committee will closely examine those applicants’ application form and relevant supporting documents before deciding to nominate them or not. Master will make the final decision on specific cases. There is no definite chance of being re-admitted for those unsuccessful applicants who appeal to the Admission Committee.
Q9: Will applicant’s exchange experience affect his or her re-admission result?
A: We welcome students who come back from exchange to continue their residence in Shun Hing College. Students with outstanding exchange experience might be put in a more advantaged position in re-admission as well.
Kind Reminder: Please do remember to finish internal application and external application (Via portal) on or before deadline. After the official results are disclosed by CEDARS in late May, do remember to accept the offer and return the signed sheet of acceptance of offer to general office before deadline.
