Ma Cheuk Yin

-Exchange at University of Tokyo –

I am not the type of guy who always participates in various events or makes good use of different opportunities offered by my university. However, the Japanese Studies Department encourages its students to participate in an exchange programme to visit Japan. Together with my strong interest in Japanese history and culture, I applied for the exchange programme, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Since the University of Tokyo offers diverse history and Japanese culture courses that align with my interests and current studies, I chose it as the institution where I will spend my time during my third year of undergraduate study. I have taken courses in disparate topics, from Japanese education to American religious history, which are rarely seen at HKU. This is a great opportunity for me to further explore my interests and review my desired career path.

Apart from studying, I will also visit different museums, temples, and shrines during the holidays. Thanks to the scholarship, I can visit and explore more of Japan since travelling across Japan is quite expensive, and it helps a lot with my financial pressures.

Siu Yin Ping

– Exchange at University of Tokyo-

I am currently a third-year student at the University of Hong Kong, pursuing a double major in General Linguistics and Japanese Studies. I am deeply honored to have received the Shun Hing Exchange Scholarship, which has enabled me to embark on a full-year exchange program at the University of Tokyo. This opportunity allows me to engage in courses related to language acquisition and Japanese language teaching — two areas I am passionate about. Through this program, I am able to learn first-hand how linguistic theory and Japanese pedagogy intersect, expanding my understanding of language from both structural and cultural perspectives.

Living in Japan has been a transformative experience, enriching my life in countless ways. It has sharpened my Japanese language skills and provided a nuanced insight into Japanese culture, history, and society. This immersive environment has also broadened my worldview, allowing me to appreciate the complexities of cross-cultural communication and connection. I am committed to making the most of this academic year by fully engaging with my studies and embracing every opportunity to build lasting connections.

Sun Shengyao

– Exchange at University of Tokyo-

I am a third-year Engineering student majoring in Computer Engineering and I’m currently participating in an exchange program at the University of Tokyo, one of the world’s top universities for engineering. This is a remarkable opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and skills, and I am eager to learn and experience as much as possible during my time here.

My passion for Japanese culture began at a young age, primarily through anime and games, which helped me develop my language skills. I achieved the JLPT N1 certification before my departure, enabling me to take all my major courses in Japanese alongside local students. I have enrolled in courses such as Very-Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) Design, Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Quantum Computing, and other fundamental topics in my field. I aim to integrate the knowledge I’ve acquired from both HKU and UTokyo, gaining a comprehensive understanding of computer architecture to make meaningful contributions to the world in the future.

I am excited about the coming months and look forward to exploring Japan, engaging with locals, and immersing myself in Japanese culture. I am confident that this experience will enrich my personal and academic growth, shaping me into a more well-rounded individual upon my return to Hong Kong.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for being awarded this scholarship. It will undoubtedly be a great support for my time and experiences in Japan.
