Ma Cheuk Yin

-Exchange at University of Tokyo –

My name is Jiwoong Choi, a humble Korean student in the Bachelor of Arts program at the University of Hong Kong. Currently I’m spending my 3rd year as an exchange student at the University of Tokyo. Before I explain a bit more about my life in Japan, I would first like to express my deepest gratitude for having received the Shun Hing Scholarships for my exchange program. It’ll be of great help in pursuing countless opportunities during my time in Japan.

As an Arts student, my major is French but I also have an additional minor in the Japanese language. One of the most important factors in acquiring a language is how real of an experience can you gain during the process. To fully embrace a language, you must first understand the culture of the people that use it. The best way to do so is obviously living amongst them for a good amount of time, which is exactly what my exchange program in UTokyo is granting me of.

I’m looking forward to what I’ll come across during my stay in one of the grandest metropolises in the world, and I’ve no doubt that it’s going to be an enriching experience that I would treasure for a lifetime.

Lau Pak Kiu Ambrose

– Exchange at Rikkyo University-

I am a third-year BSc student majoring in Environmental Science and Japanese Studies at the University of Hong Kong. I am studying at Rikkyo University in the College of Intercultural Communication for the 2025-26 academic year. I am grateful for the opportunity to spend my year studying abroad in Japan, as I have always been fascinated by all aspects of the country, especially its history and culture.

My time in Japan will be a significant boost in my goal of mastering the Japanese language. Living in Japan allows me to fully immerse myself in the language, whether in daily life or while socializing with fellow classmates. Admittedly, I have never been good at socializing, and I rarely participate in university events. However, I plan to join more extracurricular activities at Rikkyo, as this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience authentic foreign culture. Academically, in addition to Rikkyo’s excellent Japanese language program, I plan to take Japanese-taught courses and challenge myself in the spring semester.

I will make the most of my time here and explore as much of Japan as possible. I look forward to my ventures in Japan in the coming months, exploring all that this enchanting country has to offer. I will make the most of this opportunity and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the HKU Japanese Studies Department and the Shun Hing College for this wonderful opportunity.

Yuka Yamane

– Exchange at Waseda University-

I am a third-year student majoring in Psychology and minoring in General Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong. I am incredibly grateful to have been awarded the Shun Hing Exchange Scholarship, which will greatly enrich my year at Waseda University and my experience in Japan.

This scholarship offers me an incredible opportunity to explore a variety of unique courses in Japanese linguistics and language that aren’t available at HKU. It enables me to delve deeper into my passion for linguistics, as well as my enthusiasm for Japanese culture and language. The prospect of learning directly about the connections between linguistic theory and the Japanese language, along with the relationships and distinctions between Japanese and English, is truly exciting.

As someone who is half-Japanese, I am eager to live in Japan and connect with my roots, while also simultaneously enhancing my Japanese language skills by immersing myself in the culture and talking with locals. Additionally, I plan to travel to other prefectures with new friends, exploring the country’s rich nature, food, and traditions.

Once again, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for this scholarship, as it will enable me to have an unforgettable exchange experience, both academically and socially.
